Description

In recognition of the 200th anniversary of the drafting of the United States Constitution, Dr. D. James Kennedy preached a message reminding Americans of the connection between the Bible and the Constitution. Today many claim that America was not established as a Christian nation. However, as Dr. Kennedy so eloquently shows in this enduring sermon, the principles enshrined in our nation’s founding documents clearly show that our nation was built on the truths of Holy Scripture.

Although many have disputed America’s Christian origins, even some notorious atheists such as H. G. Wells have acknowledged that the Constitution of the United States was “indubitably, unquestionably, Christian.” We find numerous basic Biblical principles incorporated into the Constitution, including equality under the law, the concept of inalienable rights, the right of private property, and the sanctity of life. Also, because the Constitution’s framers recognized the sinfulness of mankind, they gave us a separation of governmental powers to prevent too much power from being put into the hands of one or a few.

Biblical principles form the framework for the Constitution of the United States, and the very foundation of the Constitution is the notion that we are a nation governed by laws, a truth rooted in the Bible. As Dr. Kennedy says, the Founding Fathers “gave us a government by law and not by men. That is the whole purpose of the Constitution—it is a government of law.” Our challenge today is to go back to these foundations and rebuild our Christian heritage.
