Liberty is a constant theme throughout the Bible. The Old Testament tells the story of the bondage of the children of Israel in Egypt, until at length God brought them out of slavery after 430 years. Then, when they worshipped idols in their own land, they were taken away by the Babylonians and suffered captivity for seventy years, until God delivered them again.
The Old Testament history is a mere foreshadowing of the greater deliverance and emancipation that Jesus Christ brings to all those who trust in Him to deliver them from the bondage of sin.
As Americans we can take our civil liberty for granted. We think it is like the air we breathe. Yet it can be taken away if we turn away from Christ, for the only true foundation for civil liberty is spiritual liberty. Where the Spirit of the Lord and the Gospel of Jesus Christ have gone, freedom has followed.
