Description

As Dr. D. James Kennedy notes in this full-length sermon, the Bible is not a textbook on economics, yet it has a great deal to say about how we can thrive economically. What it says is true and valuable. From the truths it contains, we can erect certain systems and derive an understanding of economic principles. It also speaks to the ethical context of economic enterprise; i.e., honesty and justice versus covetousness, envy, and jealousy.

What the Bible says about work and private property are foundational to any true understanding of economics. God ordained both as part of His plan for mankind to fulfill their “probation” in this world. How else can we demonstrate faithfulness, honesty, and even charity if we do not work or exercise stewardship over our possessions? Thus any economic system, such as communism or socialism, which does not respect God’s commandment, “Thou shalt not steal,” is ruled out.

Today “charity” is confused with “social justice” and governments coerce people into giving to support the welfare state, which claims it can redistribute wealth more “equitably.” But not only is this contrary to the biblical understanding of justice, which does not discriminate between classes or groups, it goes against the biblical principles upon which free-market systems are built, principles that were brought to light by John Calvin and other Reformers.

Public welfare is neither just nor charitable because it forcibly takes money from one person and gives it to another. Public welfare also tempts people to take advantage of public money and to fight for as much of it as they can get. It destroys private charity and creates vice and laziness.“ The welfare state inevitably produces more of that which it sets out to cure,” observes Dr. Kennedy.
